My partner Greta and I are on a two-week vacation to Canada to see the autumn colors. Our first week was spent in Nova Scotia and
Prince Edward Island, two of the four Maritime Provinces.
Walking the harbor area in Halifax is a must. We settled on lobster for dinner in Murphy's, the best known lobster restaurant on the waterfront. The people in Nova Scotia are incredibly happy and friendly. It's a whole different culture there.
We included Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, in our trip. You get there by a 75-minute ferry ride. The highlight was going to Cavendish, where the book
Anne of Green Gables was written. Toured the house of Green Gables
Spent the night in charming Charlottetown, the capital, right on the water.
After a ferry ride back, we toured Cape Breton Island, following the Cabot Trail, and then stayed at a cozy motel in Cheticamp, a tiny fishing village.
On our last day in Nova Scotia, we drove to Peggy's Cove, about a half hour south of Halifax, on the water. There is a sobering memorial there to the victims of Swissair flight 111, which crashed six miles off the coast on October 2, 1998.
The next day, we boarded the train in Halifax to Montreal for a 20-hour overnight trip.
